The guests who gathered on a windy July day in St. John's for the official sod turning of Kenny's Pond Retirement Residences were happy to applaud a $2,000 donation to the Seniors Resource Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador as part of the afternoon's events.
Pictured is chairwoman Linda Bowering accepting the donation - which was directed to the organization's province wide Healthy Aging Program - on behalf of the Seniors Resource Centre from Rod Wilson, CEO of Reichmann Seniors Housing, the parent company behind the new 122-suite facility. Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence is the firm's first project in Newfoundland and Labrador.
"We feel very positive about joining this community", said Doreen Bennink, VP operations for the residence and a Newfoundland native, "and we wanted to share our sense of good fortune. The Seniors Resource Centre does important work across the province - we understand and share their commitment to supporting healthy, active lifestyles and choices for seniors. We hope that we will be able to work together in the future, as well."
In addition to acknowledging the direct support that the new development is making towards their programming, Bowering expressed the Centre's appreciation at having a new residence in St. John's. "The Seniors Resource Centre has been advocating for more living options for seniors for some time, and assisted-living options are particularly need," she said.
The sod turning was a ceremonial first step in the construction process for Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence, which will offer both independent and assisted-living options. The building is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2008.
